Car accidents are an unfortunate occurrence on Georgia roads. Although some are minor fender benders that don’t cause injuries, others are far more serious. Some accidents are severe enough to cause blunt eye trauma, which can be catastrophic.

Understanding blunt eye trauma

Blunt eye trauma can be caused by various things such as motor vehicle accidents, sports activities or deliberate acts of violence. When the eye experiences a forceful blow, it can result in damage to the orbital bones, eyelid or eyeball. In cases where it occurs due to car accidents, the eye can suffer serious trauma upon the impact.

Different symptoms may occur if you sustain blunt eye trauma. You might have blurred vision, double vision or even blindness. Some people sustain cuts or bruising around the outside of their eye along the delicate skin of the eyelid. Redness of the whites of the eye is also common; some people suffer a black eye with swelling.

In the worst-case scenario, blunt eye trauma can cause a person’s eye to be pushed into the back of the eye socket. This causes pain and tenderness. Some people can suffer permanent blindness as well.

Medical treatment for blunt eye trauma

It’s crucial to seek medical treatment after a car accident. If you suffer blunt eye trauma, take it seriously; your eyes and vision are precious. Depending on the severity of your injury, you might be prescribed pain medication and the doctor may recommend you use ice packs to alleviate swelling. You may be given an eye patch or prescribed eyedrops to reduce swelling and intraocular pressure that could lead to glaucoma and blindness.

In the most severe cases of blunt eye trauma, surgery might be necessary. The doctor will probably require you to have follow-up medical appointments for additional potential treatment and to monitor the progress of your healing.
